Case Studies

Over the past three years we have worked on over 220 projects in a wide variety of locations and land uses. A selection of recent projects are described below.

Residential

Wood End Crescent, Shipley, West Yorkshire – Transport Assessment and Travel Plan. The development proposals comprised 159 new dwellings comprising a mix of apartments, terraced houses, semi-detached houses, bungalows and detached houses. The dwellings will provide a mixture of private/non-private accommodation.

Birkin Lane, Grassmoor, Derbyshire – Design of Off-site traffic management measures and presentation of evidence on highway matters at public inquiry. A scheme to reduce traffic speeds on Birkin Lane was initially agreed with Derbyshire County Council to ensure that sufficient visibility would be available at the site access. Planning permission for the development of 25 dwellings was then refused, contrary to officer advice although consent was obtained subsequently following a public inquiry.  

Sword Drive, Hinckley, Leicestershire - Transport Assessment, Travel Plan and negotiations to resolve off-site impact Issues. A comprehensive transport assessment and travel plan was initially prepared in support of the proposed development of 145 dwellings. Further reports were then produced to enable off-site impact issues to be satisfactorily resolved with the Highways Agency and Local Highway Authority. 

Old Boston Road, Coningsby, Lincolnshire – Advice on site layout issues and Transport Assessment. Advice on site layout issues was provided to ensure that the site layout would be compatible with future development aspirations. A transport assessment was then produced for the first phase of development, comprising 69 dwellings and following negotiations with the Local Highway Authority, planning permission was duly granted.

Upper Haugh, near Rawmarsh, Rotherham –  Transport Assessment. The proposed development comprised 360 new dwellings comprising a mix of apartments, terraced houses, semi-detached houses and detached houses.

Former Calcining Works site, Milvale Street, Middleport, Staffordshire – Transport Assessment and Travel Plan. The development proposals were to construct 19 new dwellings comprising 5 houses and 14 apartments.

Commercial

Capitol Park, Tingley, Leeds – Transport Assessment and Travel Plan. The now consented development comprises 11,535sqm of office development. Potential impacts at M62 junction 26 were a particular issue, requiring extensive TRANSYT analysis of the traffic signal controlled roundabout to demonstrate that the proposed development would not materially affect operation.  

Clockmill Road, Gateshead – Transport Assessment, Travel Plan and negotiations to resolve off-site impact issues. A comprehensive transport assessment and travel plan were produced to consider the effects of a 49,000sqft office development on the adjacent highway network, including the nearby A1 trunk road. A further report and negotiations with the Highways Agency were necessary to demonstrate that development would not materially affect the trunk road and enable planning permission to be granted.

Huncoat Power Station, Accrington - Transport Assessment, Travel Plan and Negotiation to Resolve Off-Site Impact Issues. A comprehensive transport assessment and travel plan was initially prepared in support of the proposed office, industrial and warehousing development on an 8 Hectare site adjacent to Huncoat Power Station. A further report was then produced in relation to operation of M65 Junction to enable off-site impact issues to be satisfactorily resolved with the Highways Agency and enable planning permission to be granted.   

Mold Road, Ewloe, North Wales – Feasibility Study. The report was produced with a view to promoting allocation of the site in the local development framework. The development would likely comprise around 50,000sqm of B2 and B8 employment uses with some ancillary B1 and A3 uses. The report establishes future levels of traffic flow and considers the suitability of various access options.  

Newark Road, Peterborough – Transport Assessment and Access Design. The development involves an 85,000sqft extension to warehouse premises, creating an additional 100 jobs. A comprehensive transport assessment was produced and improved access agreed to accommodate increased goods vehicle traffic.

Hotels and Leisure

Aldwark, nr Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire – Transport Assessment and Travel Plan. The now consented development involves provision of 73 additional bedrooms at the Aldwark Manor hotel. The transport assessment demonstrated that additional traffic could be suitably accommodated on the adjacent rural roads.   

Crewe, Cheshire – Travel Plan. Development comprising an extension to the existing Crewe Hall hotel, including the provision of a new Accommodation Block, new Conference facilities and a new Spa and Leisure Block. The development was conditioned at the Planning Approval stage with the requirement to operate a Travel Plan which covers both the existing facilities and the permitted development.

Stratford Road, Solihull, West Midlands – Transport Statement and Travel Plan.  The development proposals were to construct an extension to the rear of the existing Corus hotel providing 40 new bedrooms, with a reduction in car parking provision.

Coxmoor Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire – Transport Statement. A transport supporting statement was produced in support of a proposed pub restaurant development. Planning permission has now been granted.
Cuerden, Lancashire – Transport Statement.  The development proposals are to provide new holiday lodges, with a bowling green, open space and water features.

Renewable Energy and Recycling

Ross on Wye – Traffic and Transport input to an Environmental Assessment. The development proposals comprised the construction of a green waste and recycling facility for composting approximately 5,000 tonnes per year of green waste and for the treatment and recycling of approximately 18,000 tonnes per year of construction, excavation and demolition waste.

East Common Lane, Selby, North Yorkshire – Transport Assessment and advice on site access issues. A comprehensive transport assessment in support of proposed to construct a renewable energy plant that would generate electricity through the anaerobic digestion of waste food products. The plant would process some 181,000 tonnes of waste each year from supermarkets and institutions. 

Birnie Hill, near Motherwell – Assessment of options for vehicular access, including the movement of wind turbine blades. The development proposals are to construct three wind turbines, and to provide access tracks and associated cabling. The assessment of access routes involved extensive analysis using Autotrack to model abnormal load movements on the adjacent highway network.

Kirby in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire – Transport Statement. The proposed development comprised an electricity generation facility using sustainable materials for fuel.

Retail

Former Allders Department Store site, Kirkstall, Leeds – Transport Assessment, Travel Plan and Expert Witness Evidence at Public Inquiry. The redevelopment comprises a total floorspace of 20,386sqm including a replacement department store, associated retail and restaurant/café units and a Leisure unit. Evidence presented at the inquiry demonstrated that the proposed development would not materially affect operation of the local highway network and planning permission has now been granted.

Northern Road, Newark – Transport Statement. The development comprises 4 retail units providing some 545sqm total floorspace. The transport supporting statement assessed likely levels of traffic generation, demonstrating that suitable access and parking would be available. Autotrack analysis was undertaken to demonstrate the suitability of proposed servicing arrangements. 

Barton-le-Willows, near Malton, North Yorkshire – Transport Assessment. Whilst the small scale development is likely to generate only a modest volume of traffic, concerns were expressed by the Highways Agency regarding safety of traffic movements on the A64 trunk road. The planning authority was however satisfied that such issues were not material and planning permission was duly granted.

Mixed Use

Kettering Business Park, Kettering – Travel Plan.  The development comprises a 30 acre mixed-use site including B1, B8, a Toby Pub Carvery and a 120 bedroom Express by Holiday Inn hotel.

Capitol Park, Leeds – Transport Assessment and Travel Plan. The proposals comprised a new B1(a) office block of size 1,115sq.m. and a hotel and leisure development of size 9,100sq.m. GFA.

Llandudno Junction – Traffic forecasting and junction feasibility design. The development proposals are at an early stage, but are likely to comprise a mix of around 100 dwellings and 10,000sq.m. of B1 employment use.

Bridgford Road, West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire – Transport Assessment, Travel Plan and advice on site layout and access. A comprehensive transport assessment was undertaken to consider the implications of the now consented mixed use scheme comprising 215 apartments, together with office and retail units.
